A landscape walk based on the story of Ralph Allen, starting in the glorious setting of Prior Park. Ralph Allen was a Cornish man from the 18th Century working from a young age in the Post Office. He moved his job to Bath and developed the postal system. The consequent wealth enabled him to purchase and develop local stone quarries and play an important role in the redevelopment of Bath as an aristocratic resort.
We will start in National Trust’s Prior Park Landscape Garden, crossing the gardens to admire the view and interpret the ‘borrowed’ landscape. We will then make our way down through Widcombe and along the river.
We will finish with a visit to the courtyard of Ralph Allen’s Town House.
This is a really special walk which perfectly illustrates Bath’s planned landscape and how beautifully its landscape and city combine.
